I have found that often weight related issues arise in session with clients. Often, as a society, we learn that over indulgence in food is the norm during times of celebration. However, similarly, we often find "comfort food" in times of despair. Habits such as this often lead people to overeating or even binge eating. We all know the health issues related to being overweight and often feel depressed or angry with ourselves when we overeat. Using Motivational Interviewing skills, we can look at our habits and begin to make changes you desire.
In a moment of self disclosure, this is an area of concern for me as I myself have recently lost over 100 pounds.
Trauma can result in people engaging in unhealthy eating habits. Often times, people with a trauma background have often times experienced violations of their boundaries which can result in them questioning or not knowing their boundaries. This can continue with their relationship with food. I work with clients on developing a healthy relationship with food and learning how to care for themselves.
